I recently bought a home that needed renovations, including a new front door.  When choosing the color of the door I Googled all kinds of color options and I found some pretty interesting facts about RED front doors:

  • An early American tradition a door painted red was a sign for tired travelers that the home was a safe place and welcoming to rest and have a bite to eat. In the years before the Civil war, some homeowners painted their front doors red to welcome passengers on the Underground Railroad.

  • Red color is considered a lucky color by the Chinese. Many doors are painted red just before Chinese New Year to invite good luck and happiness.

  • In Feng Shui, a red door is symbolic of an opening of “chi” or energy. Red door also drives evil forces away and promotes the awakening of positive energy. In Feng Shui your red door has to face south - it is a fire element!

  • In Ireland red doors ward off ghosts and evil spirits.

  • In Scotland homeowners were happy to part their front doors bright red after they had paid off their mortgages!

  • Albert Einstein: Because the genius apparently had trouble identifying his own home in Princeton, New Jersey, he had the front door painted red.

  • In the bygone era of door-to-door salespeople, the ever-popular Fuller Brush salesmen would pass by your house if the door was red. In Fuller Brush lore, a red door reportedly meant "no sale.”

  • The Evil in Medieval: Gothic cathedral architecture in the Middle Ages featured red doors, which symbolized the blood of Christ on north, south, and east doors of a church. Such symbolism represented making the sign of the cross: the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Thus, the edifice was marked as a sanctuary, identified as a refuge and safety zone from physical or spiritual dangers. The red doors shut out evil. Supposedly an enemy could not pursue his victim across the sacred threshold.

  • In psychology, active people who always want to be in the centre of attention prefer this shade.

  • In coloring (the science of color, including knowledge of the nature of color and their basic characteristics) red color means activity and vivacity. It helps to create a sense of celebration in the interior, fills the room with energy and emphasizes accents.

What color is your front door? My door is blue - that's another blog!
