According to WMBF reporter Ian Klein, the Pawleys Island Chapel was carefully moved across the street in Februaryso that repairs can be made on the building’s foundation.

The church, which has been in the Pawleys Island community for about 70 years, has been lifted and moved across Myrtle Avenue between the North and South Causeways.

The move began at about 8 a.m. Friday February 23, but after some mechanical issues the move took place on Monday February 26.

The Pawleys Island Chapel holds weddings during the off-season, and in June, July and August, their Sunday service attracts 200 to 250 people.

Beginning in Colonial days, plantation owners would move across several rivers for the summer to Pawleys Island.  Household goods and furnishings, clothing and food would be loaded onto wagons and taken across two or three rivers- the  Black River, the Pee Dee River and the Waccamaw – to spend their time on the seashore.

Since the late 1940’s, the chapel has weathered a number of hurricanes and tropical storms, including hurricanes Hazel in 1954 and Hugo in 1989.

Pawleys Island is a special place for Island people or ones who come here to visit.
