The area was growing and it needed a name, in early 1900's this little surf side locale held a sanctioned contest to give her a name. With so many wax myrtles around, the oblivious choice was Myrtle Beach.

The 1930's were good for Myrtle Beach, the town was incorporated, the Chamber of Commerce was chartered and boats and ships were allowed to travel through the Intracoastal Waterway. By the 1940's & 1950's industrialization was in full swing. The Air Force Base was being built and King's highway was black topped. Myrtle Beach was moving full steam into the future right up to this day, October 15, 1954. Hurricane Hazel struck Myrtle Beach with 140 mph winds at peak high tide. The area was devastated, wiping out homes, business and anything else that was not fastened down.
Though you would think with all this destruction Carolinians would be down and out but not the case here. If anything, it drove them harder and inspired them and gave them new perspective for the future of Myrtle Beach. The piers were rebuilt and re-opened Coastal Carolina Junior College (Coastal Carolina University) was built. The Holiday Inn chain became the first corporate motel in Myrtle Beach. Even The Saturday Evening Post ran articles to its national readers featuring Myrtle Beach.
In the 1960's and 1970's growth was explosive. The golfing packages became popular, by combining motel and tee times discounts into one. More Technical education facilities were built, to bring more than just visitors but people to live here year round. In this time frame, the airport began its inaugural commercial flights.
1980's were looking extremely prosperous, with singer Calvin Gilmore opening Carolina Opry and live singing was born right here. Also, Hollywood put out a movie about a fun filled trip to Myrtle Beach called "Shag, The Movie" which brought more notoriety to the area.
With another hurricane brewing in the Atlantic, once again Myrtle Beach was in the path of another hurricane, this one was named Hugo. Hurricane Hugo hit the South Carolina coast on September 22, 1989, yet again another category 4 hurricane, winds 135-140 mph with surge waters as high as 20+ feet. Hugo was not a direct hit to Myrtle Beach, but the storm was felt none the less. Damage was tremendous, loss of property, damages to homes and business was severe. And once again Myrtle Beach rebuilt better, stronger and more amazing.
The 1990's brought more industry as well as new ways to improve on growing the family beach locations. With the new industry would also bring new employees, and new families to live and grow in the area of Myrtle Beach.
